Target Audience:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Statement of Need/Program Overview:
One of the biggest challenges SANE programs face today is sustainability and healthy growth. Particularly in this challenging economic and political environment, keeping programs moving forward, rather than simply just getting by, becomes increasingly challenging. This session will look at some of the key tenants for program stability and long-term sustainability, including funding, staff recruitment and retention, and collaboration.
Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Participants will be able to describe strategies for program sustainability.
- Participants will be able to identify specific sustainability challenges in their own programs.
Presenter(s):
Jenifer Markowitz, ND, RN, WHNP-BC, SANE-A
Dr. Markowitz is a forensic nursing consultant who specializes in issues related to sexual assault and domestic violence, including medical-forensic examinations, strangulation, expert witness testimony, and professional education and development. She currently provides expert testimony, case consultation, and TA and develops training materials, resources, and publications. Until December 2012, she served as the Medical Advisor for AEquitas: The Prosecutor’s Resource on Violence Against Women. A forensic nurse examiner since 1995, Dr. Markowitz has presented and facilitated for organizations such as the National District Attorneys Association and several State prosecuting attorney associations, as well as the Judge Advocate General’s Corps for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Her past national activities include working with the DOJ’s OVW to develop a national protocol and training standards for SAFEs, with the U.S. Department of Defense to revise the military’s Sexual Assault Evidence Collection kit and corresponding documentation forms, and on the advisory board for the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. She is the author of multiple publications, including several book chapters and the clinical text The Color Atlas of Domestic Violence (Mosby), and serves as a member of the editorial board of the Sexual Assault Report. In 2004, Dr. Markowitz was the recipient of the IAFN’s Distinguished Fellow award. In 2011, Dr. Markowitz was elected to the IAFN’s board of directors and served as President in 2012. Dr. Markowitz received a BA from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her clinical doctorate in nursing (ND) at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and is board certified as a women’s health nurse practitioner and a SANE (Adult/Adolescent).
Jennifer Pierce-Weeks, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P
Ms. Pierce-Weeks, a Project Director for IAFN, works with project partners and developed and implemented IAFN’s 40-hour online SAFE Adult/Adolescent training program with 16-hour clinical skills workshop through a grant from NIJ. She regularly presents nationally on a variety of forensic nursing-related topics, including child and adult sexual assault, intimate partner violence, strangulation, child maltreatment, and SART development. With more than 27 years’ experience as an emergency nurse, Ms. Pierce-Weeks became a SANE in 1995, first serving as a Facility Coordinator and then as the State of New Hampshire SANE Program Director. In 2007, she moved to Colorado Springs joining an established SANE program and successfully expanding the program from SANE to a comprehensive Forensic Nurse Examiner Program. Dual board certified as a SANE-A and a SANE-P, she continues to work as a forensic nurse examiner with her local program. Ms. Pierce-Weeks’ work at a national level includes being Past-President of IAFN, where she served on the board from 2006 to 2010 and as a consultant for the Southwest Center for Law and Policy’s SAFESTAR Project and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s SANE Sustainability Project. In addition, she has written, edited, and reviewed State-specific protocols and customized protocols for hospitals, SARTs, and Tribal communities. She also was a contributing author for the most recent edition of the Atlas of Sexual Violence; has contributed to Forensic Health Online; has published in the Journal of Forensic Nursing and the Journal of Emergency Nursing; and has been featured in publications such as Evidence Technology Magazine, USA Today, and the National Center for Victims of Crime Profiles in DNA segment.
