Statement of Need/Program Overview:
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, elder abuse is relatively new in Native American communities, with only limited data available. Tribal codes that protect elders are currently being developed but information about and an understanding of how to identify and combat elder abuse is lacking.
This webinar will provide attendees with a working knowledge of how to identify what elder abuse is in a culturally appropriate context and what resources they have to help patients.
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Define and discuss elder abuse.
- Discuss demographic and cultural information about the elder tribal populations.
- Explain nursing roles in identifying and responding to elder abuse and what resources are available.

Trisha Sheridan, DNP, APRN, WHNP-BC, SANE-A, CFN
Ms. Sheridan is an advanced practice nurse and has been a certified SANE for over three years. In addition she has been a Forensic Nurse Program Coordinator for over a year. In both roles she has had the opportunity to work with older victims of violence. In addition, Ms. Sheridan is the task force coordinator on the IAFN’s Nursing Response to Elder Abuse curriculum update.
