Target Audience: 

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Statement of Need/Program Overview: 

SANE's are uncertain of how to care for pregnant victims of sexual assault. It is the projected outcome that with the information provided by this presentation, pregnant victims of sexual assault will receive appropriate care with a team approach.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the physical changes of pregnancy in relation to sexual assault.
  • Discuss the risks of sexual assault for each trimester of pregnancy.
  • Describe the adaptations in the medical/forensic care of the pregnant woman.
  • Explain the unique impact of sexual assault on the pregnant woman and her family.
  • List at least 4 additional resources for the medical/forensic care of the pregnant woman.

Presenter(s): 

Elise J. Turner, MSN, CNM, SANE-A

Elise J. Turner is a certified nurse-midwife with over 30 years of experience in a variety of fields of nursing. Her main areas of practice are nursing education, reproductive health and forensic nursing. She served as the coordinator of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program in Mississippi for 11 years, and has helped establish forensic programs within the United States and abroad. Active in the International Association of Forensic Nurses, Ms. Turner is the past chair of the Ethics Committee, served as a Director and is currently a member of the Awards Committee and Practice Review Committee of the Board of Forensic Nursing Certification. Her consulting and training experiences include nursing, medical, prosecution, law enforcement, military, and Indian tribes. She has been on three training missions for the US Department of Justice to Kosovo and the Republic of Macedonia, and worked with United Nations teams. Ms. Turner was the 2008 recipient of the IAFN's Virginia A. Lynch Pioneer Award in Forensic Nursing.
