Target Audience:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of children of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Statement of Need/Program Overview:
Clinicians evaluating patients who have experienced sexual assault often fail to recognize the importance of comprehensive medical treatment and evaluation of the patient, which is included in the medical forensic examination. They lack basic training in performing the medical forensic evaluation of the patient, and are unable to provide the services or the care necessary to prevent long term health sequelae in the aftermath of sexual violence. Current peer reviewed literature indicates that to provide the best outcomes for the patient in terms of their health and well-being, a provider needs specialized education and training in the care of this patient population. This online training will provide clinical information, along with the cultural and historical information necessary for completing a medical forensic evaluation on the American Indian/Alaska Native populations that Indian Health Services provide services to.

Kim Nash, BSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P
Ms. Nash has been practicing as a registered nurse for 15 years and as a forensic nurse for 7 years. She earned her BSN from Regis University in 1998 and became a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner in 2006. Dual board certified as a SANE-A and a SANE-P, she is part of a team of forensic nurses at Memorial Hospital, University of Colorado Health in Colorado Springs, Colorado who provide medical forensic care to more than 1200 patients per year who are victims of violence (sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, strangulation, human trafficking). Additionally, she provides clinical skills training through Memorial Hospital’s Simulation Laboratory, teaching sexual assault care to providers from across the US, with a special emphasis on those working in rural or underserved areas. Ms. Nash’s work at the national level includes serving on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Forensic Nurses ( IAFN) and presenting at the International Conference on Forensic Nursing Science and Practice. Additionally, she is the Past President of the Colorado Chapter of IAFN. In 2012, she served as an International consultant for a USAID project in Swaziland, Africa, mentoring local health care professionals in the care of the pediatric rape patients with an emphasis on the prevention of HIV.
Shalotta Sharp, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, ADN
Shalotta Sharp, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, ADN has been practicing as a forensic nurse for 12 years. She became a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner in 2007 (adult) and earned her pediatric certification in 2008. She has performed over 1100 forensic medical exams on pediatrics, adolescents and adults. She has served as adjunct faculty Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault since 2005. Primary instructor for SANE-A Course since 2010, Nurse manager Pediatric Forensic Clinic since 2009. Extensive Instructor Experience provided for Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Prosecutors, Judges, Law Enforcement, EMS and Advocates, Qualified as medical expert, SANE expert and Strangulation expert in Judicial Proceedings in Circuit Court, Chancery Court and Youth Court of MS, and US Court Martials for the US Military.

How to Obtain your CNE Certificate
IAFN will use their standard activity evaluation for CNE. More information will be provided onsite.
Registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, physicians, and physician assistants are invited to attend this five-day, classroom-based pediatric sexual assault examiner (PSAE) training. Participants will learn the elements of conducting comprehensive pediatric medical forensic examinations in cases involving sexual assault. This 40 hour classroom-based course will cover topics including:
- Trauma Informed Care
- Dynamics of Pediatric Sexual Assault
- The Medical Forensic Evaluation
- Medical Management
- Program/Operational Issues
- Patient-Centered Coordinated Team Approach
- The Justice System and Testimony
- Vicarious Trauma and Self Care
Registration is free to health care providers from IHS, Tribal, and Urban Indian health care facilities. Health care providers from referral facilities that serve American Indian or Alaska Native victims of sexual assault are also eligible to attend at no cost. Materials will be provided. Meals are not provided.
