Target Audience:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Statement of Need/Program Overview:
Medical forensic care of the adult and adolescent patient who has experienced sexual assault is much more than the collection of a sexual assault evidence kit. This webinar will provide an outline of the comprehensive, holistic care that should be delivered to the patient in the aftermath of sexual assault in the medical forensic exam.
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Describe the comprehensive medical forensic examination
- Recognize the importance of the medical forensic history to guide the exam
- Recognize the medical care and treatment that is delivered as a component of the comprehensive exam
- Summarize the potential long term health consequences for the patient
- Discuss safety planning and discharge for the patient as a component of the exam

Ms. Day, the SAFE Technical Assistance Coordinator for IAFN, disseminates the National SAFE Protocol and provides TA to those who work with sexual assault victims. She regularly presents nationally on a variety of medical forensic examination-related topics, including the National Protocol and Training Standards, the medical forensic examination, and community sexual assault protocol development. Possessing more than 35 years of nursing experience, Ms. Day became a forensic nurse examiner in 1998, first serving as a facility coordinator and as the county-wide Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Facilitator. Dual board-certified as a SANE Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) and a SANE Pediatric (SANE-P), she continues to work as a forensic nurse examiner with her local program. Ms. Day’s work on a national level includes the DOJ National Prison Rape Elimination Commission evidence collection group, the U.S. Attorney General’s Violence Against Women Federal and Tribal Prosecution Task Force, the Southwest Center for Law and Policy’s SAFESTAR Project, OVC’s Vision 21 project, and OVC’s Federal Advisory Committee on the SANE SART, AI/AN Initiative. She was a contributing author for the most recent edition of the Atlas of Sexual Violence (Elsevier), SANE/SAFE Forensic Learning Series: Entry Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment, Intermediate Level and Advanced Level (STM Learning); has published in Sexual Assault Report; and has been featured in such publications as the Emergency Nurses Association’s ENA Connection and Nursing Spectrum.
