Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Statement of Need/Program Overview:

The majority of health care providers have only minimal formal education and even less clinical experience in dealing with suspected cases of physical and sexual child abuse. This presentation will review the different types of medical and nursing professionals who commonly deal with child abuse pediatrics, their respective roles, and the skill’s set expected of each regarding child abuse. History taking and physical examination of suspected victims of child sexual and physical abuse will also be covered through review of actual cases.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify both common and unusual child abuse physical and sexual abuse mimics.
  • Identify the appropriate medical workup for cases of suspected physical abuse in infants and young children.
  • Develop specific clinical and history taking skills related to possible physical and sexual abuse
