Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Statement of Need/Program Overview:

It is assumed that through education as well as on the job training medical providers possess the knowledge and skill necessary to provide holistic, comprehensive, compassionate care to the patients they serve. Most medical providers, however, have not received training or developed the skills to provide expert, objective and empirically sound court testimony.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify the components necessary to develop expertise as a medical/nursing provider in cases of child sexual abuse.
  • Summarize the necessary steps to prepare for testimony in a legal proceeding.
  • Identify the factors that aid in delivering successful expert testimony.
