According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, work in elder abuse is relatively new in Native American communities, with only limited data available. Tribal codes that protect elders are currently being developed but information about and an understanding of how to identify and combat elder abuse is lacking. Indicators/hallmarks of Elder abuse are also being developed and culturally-specific high-risk situations are beginning to be identified.
